They spend the day together shrimping in Timbalier bay and later they spend the afternoon at Petes camp making a pot of gumbo. Throughout their day together, their conversation covers numerous subjects. Pete imparts a certain unique wisdom to Jack, using metaphors and analogies by drawing upon imagery peculiar to the culture and lifestyle of south Louisiana.“I think about all them Japs that died, and all them boys that died next to me, and I wonder why. What did we die for? Every time I pulled the trigger and a Jap fell, and every time the Japs pulled the trigger and a Marine fell, somewhere else a momma and daddy cried. All them dead boys. Henderson field was litter with them dead Jap. Can’t hardly find any good in it. You just get to the point where you’re doin’ it and not thinking too much about it. Just trying to stay alive and keep your buddy alive. And you know, death is everywhere. No gettin’ around it. For us to eat this gumbo, there had to be something die. All these shrimp, and the hog that got this sausage, even them vegetable, they’re all alive and then they are dead and we eat this gumbo and don’t even think about it, but we eat to stay alive. This gumbo pot hold both death and life. No different than your own life, Jack.”
