She wanted to find excitement. She wanted to fill a void that she has felt almost her entire life. Her father died when she was fourteen, but when he was still alive, he would share stories with her about magic and adventure on another world, somewhere far away. Annie grew up believing these stories as just those…stories. But when she is suddenly kidnapped and taken to a far off land, she begins to wonder if what her father had been telling her had been truths. Had he been warning her? Preparing her for something he knew she might, someday, be faced with? When Annie first arrives in this new world, she makes plans to somehow find her way back home to her friends and family. She has been thrust into the middle of a traditional competition for the hand of the King that she does not want to compete in. For it is the King, himself, who has had her brought to this world from her own home that she is desperate to return to. Annie decides she must play along and join in the “courting game” while, in secret, she tries to figure out the best way to escape. In the meantime, she learns about the customs and also about some of the history of this world called Idonea. She also forms new friendships, and begins romantic relationships, though reluctantly, with the King of Idonea, and also with the General of the King’s Army. Annie must contend with competitive and judgmental courtiers, exiled and vengeful monsters from a nearby world, and also with herself. While she begins her journey determined to leave Idonea and get back home, she finds she is fighting with herself when her heart wants to stay, but her common sense tells her she must go. As the story progresses, Annie learns that only one of the men who claims to love her has good and true intentions toward her. Lies are being told, secrets about Annie’s father are being kept from her, and she must discover the truth. But who can tell her? Who will tell her? Annie wants the truth, but she may not discover it until it is too late.
